History Presentation: Great Britain’s Role in the American Civil War--Tues, June 17 @ 12:45 PM
Not only did the “war between the states” divide the American people, it also divided Great Britain. Although the British were officially neutral, they had been dependent on cotton from the South. Throughout the American Civil War, elite opinion tended to favor the Confederacy, while public opinion tended to favor the Union Forces. The Confederacy believed that British dependence on cotton for its large textile industry would lead to diplomatic recognition or military intervention. Adults 55+ can learn about this riveting story with local historian Robert Bond. Advance registration is requested by June 16. Interested parties can stop by in person to New Horizons Senior Center, 100 Conway Avenue, 2nd floor or call 610 664-2366.
