In many ways, 2020 has been a test of our resilience. Our librarians and staff have met the challenge every step of the way with hard work and great dedication.

The sudden shut-down in March provided the impetus for new and creative online programming by the libraries. We increased our digital resources, including books, music and films, and internet hotspots outside the libraries. During our phased re-opening we expanded services through contactless pickup at all libraries and by offering grab-n-go summer activity kits for our young patrons at some local libraries. In our current phase, we have re-opened to the public with extra cleaning and safety measures while continuing contactless pick-up services.

Our goal is to continue to provide Lower Merion residents with excellent library services, especially during this time of heightened need. As public institutions, these valuable library services are available to you and everyone at no cost.

This year has also been challenging for our libraries’ finances. While Lower Merion Township provides support for operations and facilities, all six of our libraries rely on the generosity of patrons and volunteers to meet the annual cost of programs, books, and materials. All of those essential things that you depend upon your library to provide.

Because of the pandemic, fundraising across the libraries is down significantly – by an estimated $250,000 this year. Support from our community is more important than ever.

Many of our libraries will be reaching out to patrons with their annual appeals in the coming weeks. If you value your local Lower Merion public library, please consider making a gift in 2020*. You can designate your donation online to support your favorite library or support system-wide initiatives through the Lower Merion Library Foundation.

* While it is always a good time to give to your library, the recent CARES Act legislation provides incentives to give in 2020. Non-itemizers can deduct $300 for charitable donations in 2020. The charitable deduction limit for itemizers also was increased up to 100% of 2020 AGI.
