Man in Critical Condition Following Belmont Crash

The crash remains under investigation.

Lower Merion Township Police are investigating a serious crash Wednesday that led to the closure of Belmont Avenue during morning rush hour.

Police said that a man driving a 2014 BMW 640i pulled up to a gas station pump around 7:20 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6. He exited the vehicle, but the car was still in drive, and the car proceeded north onto Belmont Avenue, police said.

The driver tried to get back into the car as it crossed Belmont, police said. The BMW entered the southbound lanes, where it struck a 2002 Infiniti i35, police said.

The BMW’s driver was seriously injured, police said, and was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is listed in critical condition.

Belmont Avenue was closed between Old Belmont Avenue and Rock Hill Road while the crash was investigated. The road was reopened around 9:35 a.m., police said.
