Penn Valley Elementary Raises Thousands For Puerto Rico

NARBERTH, PA – An elementary school in the Lower Merion School District held a fundraiser for those affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, and the effort was a huge success.

Penn Valley Elementary School recently held a "Pennies for Puerto Rico" fundraiser where students and staff collected money in an effort to help in the hurricane-ravaged island's relief efforts.

After all was said and done, the fundraiser generated $2,741.26 to be donated to Habitat for Humanity in Puerto Rico to help families affected by the hurricane rebuild their homes.

The district said each day during the campaign, six buckets were placed in the lobby with each grade level having their own designated bucket in which students could place any coins or dollars they collected into the different buckets.

Every penny that was placed in a bucket added a point to that grade level's score, while any other type of coin or bill subtracted points from that score.

At the end of the campaign, Penn Valley's fifth grade class had the most points.

The winning students earned the chance to do the morning announcements with Señora Claussen, and each class is getting a certificate to hang in their classrooms for their participation in the campaign.

The students and staff at Penn Valley would like to thank Home Depot in Glen Mills for donating the buckets for the Penny Competition, and the Republic Bank in Wynnewood for their help in calculating the money each day.
