Viewfinder: Cynwyd Heritage Trail Development
Take a look at the progress being made along the trail and some of the sights.
is part of Lower Merion Township's effort to expand open spaces and create trails for walking, biking, jogging, etc. The trail is about two miles long, running from SEPTA's Cynwyd Station at Bala and Montgomery avenues all the way to Belmont Avenue and Rock Hill Road. Running along the trackless bed of an old railroad line, the trail will eventually cross the Schuylkill River on an old railroad bridge and connect to the 130-mile long Schuylkill River Trail that runs through Manayunk.
Volunteers from the Friends of the Cynwyd Heritage Trail, a nonprofit organization, help maintain the trail. Currently, the trail is being excavated and developed. Drainage lines are being installed, a roadbed is being laid, trees are being planted. There are months of work to be done yet, but based upon the plans the trail offers great promise.
This week, I walked the two miles to make a visual tour of what one sees today. With the trail under construction, there were no people along it other than the workmen. The gallery will give you an idea of the scope of the undertaking and some things you can see along the trail.
