Smucker's Recalls Natural Chunky Peanut Butter

The product may be contaminated with salmonella.

Take a look at your peanut butter jar today before enjoying any of its contents. The J.M. Smucker Co. is recalling thousands of 16-ounce jars of its Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter Chunky because of a possible salmonella contamination.

The recalled jars have "Best if Used By" dates of Aug. 3, 2012, and Aug. 4, 2012, plus the production codes 1307004 and 1308004. They would have been purchased during the past week or so.

Healthy people infected with salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In some cases, salmonella may enter a person's bloodstream and trigger infections, endocarditis, arthritis and other serious ailments. Patients usually become ill 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food.

No illnesses have been reported related to the recall, according to Smucker's.

The product was distributed in Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
