Whitehall Man Indicted On Explosives, Firearms Charges

He's charged with making illegal explosive devices for the past two months.

WHITEHALL, PA —A Whitehall man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of violating federal firearms and explosives laws. U.S. Attorney Scott Brady's office announced the five-count indictment Wednesday against Kurt Cofano, 32.

According to the indictment, on July 9 and 10, Cofano was found to be in possession of unregistered destructive devices. The indictment also alleges that on those days, Cofano, a user of a controlled substance, possessed a firearm, a violation of federal law.

The indictment further alleges that from May until July, Cofano made destructive devices.

"This investigation successfully disrupted a very real threat," FBI Pittsburgh Special Agent in Charge Mike Christman said. "A mix of unstable, homemade manufactured explosives, large amounts of ammo and a person who has already made threats to inflict harm is an extremely
dangerous combination."

Cofano faces up to 50 years in prison, a fine of as much as $750,000 and other penalties.
