Seniors Dodji Freitas and Erin Mann Named Holy Family Northeast Times Athletes of the Year (05/16/13)

Philadelphia, Pa. - Holy Family University senior men's soccer forward Dodji Freitas (Philadelphia, Pa. (Togo)//Samuel Fels) and senior women's basketball center Erin Mann (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) were named the Holy Family Athletes of the Year chosen by the Northeast Times.

Both athletes were recognized at the 28th annual Northeast Sports Awards Banquet Wednesday night.  The banquet recognized some of Northeast Philadelphia's top competitors from the high school level to the collegiate ranks.  A number of awards were presented in such categories as Most Courageous Athlete, Unsung Hero, Scholar Athlete, Sportsmanship Award and Player and Coach of the Year to name a few.

In his senior season, Freitas helped lead the Tigers to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament after the team finished 8-7-3 overall and 5-5-1 in conference action.  Freitas compiled a career season statistically as he finished the year with a career-high 15 goals.  He also recorded three assists to total a team-best 33 points.

His 15 goals scored during the course of the season had him tied for the sixth-most goals in a season in program history.  He tied former standout Matt Kocher who recorded 15 goals in 2008.  Freitas concluded the season tied for second in goals scored in the CACC and was third in total points.

Freitas received a number of postseason accolades, including National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II All-East Region honors.  Freitas, earning NSCAA honors for the first time in his career, was named to the second team.  He also earned All-CACC first team recognition for the first time after previously receiving second team honors the previous two seasons.  He also was named to the Daktronics All-East Region second team.

Freitas wrapped up his career with 21 goals, five assists and 47 points.

On the court, Mann capped her senior season averaging a career-high 18.4 points per game, which was second most in the CACC.  She led the conference with a .535 shooting percentage and was tops with a career-high 90 blocks.  Mann also finished the year sixth with 258 total rebounds.  She averaged 8.3 rebounds per game during the course of the season.  Mann led the team with 12 double-doubles.

As a result of her individual success, Mann earned a number of postseason accolades, highlighted with Women's Basket Coaches Association (WBCA) Division II Coaches' All-America team recognition.  Mann was named Honorable Mention becoming the second player in program history to earn Division II All-America honors.  Former standout Catherine Carr (2007-2011) was recognized as Honorable Mention All-America in 2010 and became the first player in program history to earn All-America status in 2011.

This season, Mann was named the conference's top player as she was named Player of the Year to go along with All-CACC first team recognition.  The three-time All-CACC recipient also was named Daktronics Most Outstanding Player in the East Region.  Mann was then selected to the Daktronics All-America second team.

Mann concluded her four-year career as one of the program's all-time scorers with 1,881 career points ranking third on the all-time scoring list.  She is also fourth all-time with 916 career rebounds.  Mann is the only player in program history to score at least 1,800 points and record at least 900 rebounds in a career.  In addition, Mann is second all-time with 247 career blocks.

Mann helped lead the team to back-to-back CACC Championships this season after scoring a game-high 26 points in the 66-56 victory over Caldwell College in the CACC Final.  She was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player for the second straight season.  As a result of the team's championship, the Tigers received an automatic bid into the NCAA Division II Tournament.  It marked Holy Family's tenth straight appearance as the Tigers made it to the East Region semifinals for the eighth consecutive year.  Holy Family finished the year with a 28-3 overall record.
