School Lane Charter School Students Support Well in Africa

K-8 School Lane charter School, has holds many fundraisers annually to support our community. This year, eighth grade students raised over $800 for The Water Project to support a well in Africa.

Following many fundraisers by other grades at School Lane Charter School, students in the eighth grade wanted to work together to made a difference. Subsequent to their “water crisis” projects, students decided to work together to save lives and bring clean water to areas of the world that do not have access to safe drinking water. Samantha McDonough, a student in Ms. Rachel Walter’s eighth grade class discovered water.org and shared it with the class. Together, students explored the website and decided the organization was a perfect fit. Students hosted a bake sale during lunch hours from March 26 through March 28. During that week, students raised a total of $813.74. But the fundraising hasn’t stopped there! Students are determined to reach their goal of $1,000 on their fundraising page, thewaterproject.org/community/profile/Rachel-walter. “There are nearly one billion people without access clean drinking water,” said Rachel Walter, eighth grade math and science teacher at School Lane Charter School. “The students studied the water crisis in science class and learned about areas with people who suffer from diseases and death due to this crisis.” Once the school reaches its goal, a well will be under construction. The class will receive pictures, GPS coordinates and updates on the construction progress as it happens. “It is great to see our students making such an impact in the world,” said Karen Schade, CEO of School Lane Charter School. “This project is particularly unique, because the students will get to see a direct result of their fundraising efforts.”
