Cats Come With Problem Bensalem Property: Report

A lawyer for the two brothers who own the home say their age, limited income and illness and hospitalization have made fixing it up hard.

BENSALEM, PA — The Intelligencer on Wednesday was reporting about a "deplorable and dilapidated" home that has been troubling neighbors, and the township, for years.

According to the report, the home on Colmar Avenue has been the subject of three years of court action. Meanwhile, neighbors report having to bury dead cats from the home that end up on their property.

Joanne Cotton, a neighbor, told the Intelligencer she's seen up to 60 cats on the property during the warmer months.

Officials say Bensalem has spent around $45,000 trying to improve conditions on the property. The township first filed a complaint in county court in February 2016, according to the paper, and got an injunction ordering the two brothers who lived there to vacate because it is not fit for humans to live there.

The original complaint came after a kerosene heater the owners were using for heat sparked a fire.

The township has worked to make sure owners improve the property and don't allow cats there, an attorney for Bensalem told The Intelligencer.

A lawyer for the brothers told the paper they are "trying hard" to improve the home, but that they're limited due to their age, living on fixed incomes and an illness and hospitalization. Neighbors told the paper, however, that they've seen the owners come to the home at night and feed the cats there.
