District Still Waits For Equipment For New Gym

Business manager remains optimistic of fall use, despite lack of HVAC equipment

The heating/ventilation/air conditioning equipment for the new gymnasium at due months ago still has not arrived.

But the business manager says he remains optimistic the $15 million gym/community center will be ready for the next school year.

School board member Wayne Lewis told his colleagues Wednesday night that he had just visited the new structure and found that the floor was being installed but workers were still waiting for HVAC equipment.

“We're making progress but we still have a ways to go,” he said.

Business manager Jack Myers later confirmed that he had heard the same thing as Lewis: the equipment, imported from Jordan, is now with customs officials in Newark, N.J.

Myers explained last month that while several containers worth of HVAC equipment had arrived, all of it was expected here six to nine months ago.

The company from which the district purchased the equipment, Petra, earlier provided temporary units at no extra cost to the district to cool the building so that the wood for the floor could get acclimated.

Nonetheless, Myers has said litigation is a possibility.

Ground was broken for the 45,000-square-foot facility in July 2009.
