BENSALEM, PA – Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick (PA-8) joined Bucks County First Responders, state lawmakers and local leaders Friday afternoon in front of the Bensalem Rescue Squad to call for a National First Responders Appreciation Day.

“First Responders’ service, while vital to the safety and success of our neighborhoods and region, is often a quiet one. Aside from the sound of sirens, few of our brave first responders are outspoken in search of accolades – or even thanks for their heroics,” said Fitzpatrick. “Our first responders should never go un-thanked or their sacrifices unappreciated.”

Fitzpatrick announced his support for national recognition of September 27 as National First Responders Appreciation Day. Pennsylvania, along with 20 other states, already recognize the date as First Responders Appreciation Day.

“Suspected cop-killer Eric Frein remains on the loose a week after shooting two PA State Troopers, killing Cpl. Bryon Dickson. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and comrades,” said Fitzpatrick. “Similarly, the loss of first responders affects Bucks County, too: Officer Brad Fox, a Warminster-native, was lost in the line of duty, as was Daniel McIntosh - a member of this squad.

“For these reasons, and for all their service and sacrifice, our first responders deserve recognition and a special day in our nation to reflect on their heroism and compassion.”

“If recent events – either abroad, or right here in Pennsylvania – have taught us one thing, it’s that we need to appreciate the service and dedication of our first responders,” said Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Harran. “I’d like to thank Congressman Fitzpatrick for his continued support of our police, fire and emergency medical services and his efforts to recognize the importance of those on the front lines.”

Joining Fitzpatrick at the event were representatives from the Bucks County Emergency Management Agency, Bucks County Fire Marshal’s Office, Bucks County Constables Association, and dozens of EMS, fire and police departments. Also in attendance were State Senator Tommy Tomlinson (R-6), State Reps. Gene DiGirolamo and (R-18) Frank Farry (R-142).

“While there is a need for a National First Responders Appreciation Day to ensure we remain grateful for the service and commitment of our emergency services, it’s critical that we remember that thanking our law enforcement, fire and medical personnel is important 365 days a year,” added Fitzpatrick.
