Owls Continue to Roll With 40-23 Win Over Council Rock South

Led by Calvin Brown, the Owls relied heavily on their defense Tuesday night in route to another win.

The Owls are known for their ability to strike quickly on offense, but it was center Calvin Brown and their defense that came up big on Tuesday night as Bensalem defeated Council Rock South 40-23 at home.

Despite scoring just four points, Brown played his usual role for the Owls on the defensive side of the ball, creating havoc for the Golden Hawks down low. Not only was he the team's leading rebounder, which is no surprise considering he stands at 6-foot-3 but he also led the Owls with five blocked shots. Four of the blocks came in the second quarter and were a big reason why the score was tied at 14 going into halftime.

“Blocking shots is what I do,” Brown said after the win. “It was a good win even though we didn't play as well as we know we can.

It was a slow first half for both teams, as their defenses locked down and forced tough shots. The Owls this season have relied on their ability to shoot the three but went just one for five from the arc in the first half, which left them frustrated.

“You know what South is capable of doing,” coach John Mullin said. “We had to make them play our game and despite struggling in the first half we had good defensive presence.”

Mullin regrouped the team during half time and they came out playing the same solid defense against a Hawks team that was better than their 6-6 record might indicate. The Owls put up just six points in the third quarter but it was still one more point than the Hawks.

In the fourth, the Hawks found themselves in foul trouble and it cost them. The Owls were able to help themselves at the free throw line as they finished the fourth quarter 10-12 from the foul line.

“A game like this shows us that we cannot take any team lightly. We made mental mistakes early but in the second half were able to lock up those mistakes,” Brown added.

With the win, the Owls now improve to 10-3 on the season with their only losses coming against Archbishop Ryan, Holy Ghost Prep and Council Rock North. They now get ready to host Pennsbury at home on Friday.
