Eugene Rothenberg, elected in 2007, has resigned from the Board of Education.
In a letter to the district read at the board meeting Wednesday night by board attorney Tom Profy III, Rothenberg wrote that he had “no choice” but to “retire” from the board, effective immediately. He did not explain further.
Board President Heather Nicholas said, “We do wish Gene well and thank him for his time on the board." After the meeting, she said she could not explain Rothenberg's reasons.

Rothenberg, a pharmacist and counselor for mentally and emotionally challenged youth, refused to comment when reached by phone Thursday.
Profy said the board has 30 days to fill his seat for a term that expires in early December. He said anyone interested needs to apply by 3 p.m. Friday, March 19, and the board will conduct public interviews and plan to appoint someone at a special meeting 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 23.
