📰 News we're reading

1. Bethlehem police defend Flock readers; department denied records request earlier this year (lehighdaily.com) — Bethlehem police are defending their growing use of Flock license plate readers while declining to release detailed records on how often they're used, who can access the data, or where cameras are placed. Civil liberties groups question the department's claim that the system isn't mass surveillance, as state lawmakers weigh new limits on license-plate data sharing and privacy protections that could affect Bethlehem drivers.

2. 2 arrested in stabbing at Bethlehem motel (mcall.com) — Two people have been arrested after an argument at the Sonesta ES Suites on Motel Drive in Bethlehem escalated into a stabbing that injured a 19-year-old and a juvenile. Bethlehem police say the confrontation began inside around 6 p.m. Tuesday and spilled into the parking lot before both victims were hospitalized and the suspects were jailed on assault-related charges.

3. Hot tub showroom shutters at Bethlehem Township shopping center (lehighvalleylive.com) — A Jacuzzi hot tub showroom has quietly closed at Southmont Plaza in Bethlehem Township, adding to a string of long-term vacancies at the busy Route 33 and Freemansburg Avenue shopping center. Township officials haven't said why the store shut down, but the darkened storefront, leasing signs, and questions about the chain's other locations raise concerns about the plaza's retail health.

4. Reverend Dale M. Henderson, 79 (news-banner.com) — A beloved Indiana pastor, Reverend Dale M. Henderson, traced his theological roots to Moravian University in Bethlehem, where he earned his sociology and theology degree before decades of ministry in the Midwest. His obituary honors a life of faith, family devotion, community leadership, and hands-on creativity, and invites friends to visitation and funeral services in Fort Wayne later this week.

5. 69 News Exclusive: U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick visits Lehigh Heavy Forge with Congressman Ryan Mackenzie (erienewsnow.com) — U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick toured Lehigh Heavy Forge in Bethlehem with Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, praising the plant's role in defense and backing Trump-era steel tariffs as key to keeping local steel jobs strong. The visit came amid a U.S.-Canada trade dispute and sparked criticism from Mackenzie's opponent, highlighting how national trade and political battles are playing out at a Bethlehem factory.
