Theresa O. also provided this great review of Indian Summer:

“It’s like the Love, Actually of the 1880s. William Dean Howells, probably best known as Mark Twain’s friend and biographer, was also a novelist, and Indian Summer is the best example of his amusing and heart-touching work. It’s like Henry James without any of the pretension or repression. A man returns to the scene of an earlier heartbreak, where he meets an old friend (who has aged very well) and her young protegee. As the writer of the introduction says, “You don’t get any points for guessing which one he falls in love with,” but you might be surprised by the turns the story takes, and you’ll doubtless appreciate the wit and thoughtfulness of the characters. A great summer read that isn’t mindless.”
