All the Hype with Microsoft and Skype

How does Microsoft's purchase of Skype affect you?

I don’t know if many of you caught the news yesterday, but Microsoft if buying Skype.

For non-techies, Skype is a FREE video-chat/conference tool that many home users have started using to keep in touch with family and friends across the miles. When using the service from computer to computer, there are no charges and with DSL or cable modem access, very little trouble with the video calls and chatter or break-up.

My own, rather large, extended family has become a primary user. We have used Skype as a way for aunts/uncles across the US to take part in trick-or-treat with their nieces and nephews. Christmas, Easter and other special occasions now include a Skype session if we aren’t all in the same location.

So, I need to ask, what does Microsoft purchasing Skype mean for me?  Hopefully it doesn’t mean the loss of a great, FREE tool.  I really don’t want to look at an extensive bill to maintain the connection and opportunities that my five- and eleven-year-old have come to love when talking to their favorite aunts and uncles.

What are your thoughts?  How will Microsoft use Skype and do you think it will remain free?  Do you think there is another Skype on the horizon?
