Budget With 1.7% Tax Hike Adopted By School Board

Directors vote 6-3 in favor of plan that will see more than 50 teachers laid off.

The Bethlehem Area School Board has just voted for final adoption of its 2011-12 spending plan that will include a 1.7 percent real estate tax hike and more than 50 layoffs among teachers and professional staff.

The vote was 6-3 in favor of adoption with directors Irene Follweiler, Loretta Leeson and Benjamin Tenaglia dissenting.

The tax hike of three-quarters of a mill translates into a school tax bill that is $57 higher for the average Bethlehem home owner.
