City Set Curbside Recycling Record in 2011

Bethlehem collected more tons of recyclables than ever; Theis/Cornfeld expands hours.

 

Bethlehem set a new record for curbside recycling in 2011 as the city collected 5,280 tons of material.

Another 2,871 tons of recyclable material was collected at the Theis/Cornfeld Recycling Center, which the city has recently announced has expanded its hours of operation.

The center at 635 Illick’s Mill Road is now open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The city’s recycling program turned a profit for the 16th consecutive year, according to a report issued to city residents.

According to the report, the city’s recycling efforts also:

  • Reduced Bethlehem’s carbon footprint by 18,416 metric tons.
  • Saved 38,354 cubic yards of landfill space.
  • Collected 30,000 tons of plant material to convert to compost and mulch.
