"Jews and Muslims Getting Along in America": A talk by Sharon Albert

Congregation Am Haskalah presents its new Speaker Series with member Sharon Albert talking about “Jews and Muslims Getting Along in America.”

Since the emergence of Islam in the 7th century, Jews and Muslims have lived together sometimes in turmoil but more often in relatively peaceful coexistence. Today in the shadow of 9/11, with so much instability in the Middle East and continuing conflict between Israel and its Arab neighbors, many American Jews, like many other Americans, have serious concerns about Islam and the “Muslim world.” But what about the Muslim next door, our Muslim-American neighbors? This talk will address some of the major issues that have emerged in the recent past, and consider the state of Jewish-Muslim relations today in the United States.

Sharon Albert teaches Islamic and Jewish studies at Muhlenberg College.  She has written on Jewish-Muslim interaction in the Medieval Mediterranean. Her recent research includes work on minority religions in post-secular America.

Coffee and dessert will be provided. No advance tickets required.
