OMG, Baseball Season Starts Today

Phillies open in Pittsburgh; IronPigs open at home; Bethlehem's Gordon Mack plays in the Fan Cave.

They may have already played three “official” games in the Major Leagues, but for most fans and players today is the real opening day of the baseball season.

The Phillies open their season this afternoon in Pittsburgh, the IronPigs open their season tonight at Coca Cola Park, while the favorite team, the hapless and hopeless Mets, open their season in Flushing this afternoon.

But no one’s opening day might be bigger than , who has already begun his stay in the MLB Fan Cave, where he and eight other Cave dwellers will compete to stay all season to watch every pitch of every game from a Greenwich Village pad that will be the envy of baseball fans across the country.

From the looks of his tweets, Mack seemed to be enjoying himself in the Cave last night, watching the Cardinals and Marlins play their season opener as the band Far East Movement played live inside the cave.

“Baseball + Live Music = OMG #thisisunreal,” he tweeted.

Earlier in the day, Mack got an up-close and personal look at the World Series trophy, which he is hoping his beloved Phillies will hoist high in October. “Ok now I’m convinced that I’m dreaming,” he tweeted.

In a Fan Cave blog post earlier in the week, he predicted that the Phillies would meet the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. Of course, he also facetiously predicted that Albert Pujols will win the National League MVP.

The Phillies play the Pirates at 1:30 p.m., with Roy Halladay on the hill against Erik Bedard. The game will be televised on WPHL, Channel 17.

The IronPigs are home at Coca-Cola Park against the homeless Yankees of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. (In case you had not heard, the Yankees Triple-A affiliate is playing the 2012 season without a home field as Lackawanna County Stadium is undergoing some serious repairs.) Dave Bush takes the mound for the Pigs. Service Electric subscribers can watch the game on TV-2.
