The Baldwin School Celebrates Its 125th Commencement

In 1889, The Baldwin School graduated its first girls, anticipating that they would go on to attend one of the "seven sister" colleges.  Yesterday, 47 seniors graduated from Baldwin and, as members of the School’s 125th graduating class, will attend colleges across America. Unlike the graduates from 125 years ago, the Class of 2013 has unlimited options.  The seniors earned 184 acceptances from 105 colleges in 40 states and four countries (United States, Canada, Scotland and France).

More than a third of the class (39 percent) will pursue science and engineering, followed by 36 percent studying liberal arts and languages, 20 percent studying business and five percent pursuing performing arts. Schools that would have been off limits to women in the 1800’s will welcome Baldwin graduates this fall including Harvard, Princeton and the U.S. Naval Academy.

Chelsea Kaiser ’13 was the student speaker at the commencement ceremony, held at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Ms. Kaiser was elected by her peers for this honor. Delivering the keynote address was Janet L. Robinson, former president and CEO of The New York Times. Ms. Robinson began her career as an elementary school teacher, before joining the Times Company where she worked for 28 years, rising to the position of president and CEO.  She was named to Forbes’ list of Most Powerful Women in the World for four consecutive years, in addition to being named one of Fortune Magazine’s 50 Most Powerful Women in Business.

To commemorate the 125th commencement, a dedicated American flag was raised over the U.S. Capitol yesterday in honor of The Baldwin School’s Class of 2013.  This tribute was made possible by Margaretta Walton ’97 and was announced by Sally M. Powell, Head of School at Baldwin. Ms. Walton is an alumna of the Baldwin School Class of  1997 and is the daughter of Margaretta Tranger Walton, Baldwin Class of 1963.

Several students were recognized for their outstanding academic performance at Baldwin and beyond. Thirty percent of this class received merit awards totaling $1.48 million. Erin McCloskey and Julia Fournier were selected as National Merit Scholarship winners. Baldwin National Merit Semifinalists include: Hannah Bao, Amalia Bowen-Sicalides, Julia Fournier, Connie Li, Erin McCloskey and Sarah Tupchong.
