Baldwin Students Recognized for National Merit Achievements

Twelve seniors received some level of recognition from the scholarship organization.

The following was submitted to Patch:

The Baldwin School is proud to announce that 12 seniors, 23 percent of the class, have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for outstanding performance.  Haley Weiss and El Pressman have been named National Merit Semifinalists, and Marlana Edwards has been named a Semifinalist in National Achievement. Carolyn Wong, Storey Wanglee, Abigail Lemmon, Isabella Romeo, Rebecca Haley, Rachel Coler, Emily Clark and Laura Bunn have been honored as Commended students.

There are nearly 1.5 million high school juniors who enter the program annually by taking the PSATs.  About one percent of those students are chosen as Semifinalists, and just two percent are named Commended students.  Semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 8,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $36 million, which will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and more than half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

“We are so proud of our seniors recognized by National Merit,” said Sally Powell, Head of School. “We believe that academic excellence begins with the ability to think logically, independently, and imaginatively. Ultimately, Baldwin aspires to cultivate in its students the desire to remain learners throughout their lives, and we wish these girls the best of luck as they continue their life-long educational endeavors.”
