Harcum College President Wins Ciervo Award

He was recognized for providing access to higher education in underserved areas as well as record enrollments.

Bryn Mawr, PA January 23, 2015 – Dr. Jon Jay DeTemple, President of Harcum College, has been selected to receive the 2015 Arthur V. Ciervo Award from CUPRAP (College and University Public Relations and Associated Professionals) which serves educational institutions in the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.

The Arthur V. Ciervo Award recognizes individuals in higher education from outside the CUPRAP organization who exemplify the mission of advancing higher education and was named in honor of Arthur V. Ciervo, one of CUPRAP’s founders and a pioneer in higher education public relations. It is the highest honor annually conferred by CUPRAP.

DeTemple holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education and MBA, both from Syracuse University and a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University. He has more than 30 years of experience in higher education leadership including serving as President of Post University and CFO at Mitchell College, both in Connecticut.

Criteria leading to DeTemple’s selection included the following: reaching a record enrollment of 1,700 students; increasing access to higher education in underserved areas within Greater Philadelphia through establishing 12 Partnership Sites with I-LEAD where associate’s degrees in selected programs can be obtained; fostering a strong connection to the Main Line Chamber of Commerce, who recognized Harcum as a Main Line Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit Business of the Year in 2012; advocating a strong program of continuing education opportunities for alums and working professionals including an annual Dental Expo; chairing the Centennial Steering Committee and driving the creation of a year-long Centennial observance to enhance the college’s visibility and advance its mission; increasing opportunities for athletes and the visibility of the NJCAA; for strengthening the College’s finances and physical plant since he took office in 2007, including a $1.2 million renovation to the Trout Library, and capital improvements to the Cohen Dental Clinic, Klein Dining Hall, and the Veterinary Technology and MLT Labs.

DeTemple will receive his award at CUPRAP’s Annual Spring Conference on Thursday, March 12, at the Hotel Hershey in Hershey, PA. Past winners include Mark S. Schweiker, 44th governor of Pennsylvania; Don L. Francis, president of the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP); and Rob McCord, treasurer of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

CUPRAP is a voluntary organization of communications professionals from colleges, universities, and independent schools dedicated to advancing the understanding of higher education and enhancing the professional development of its members. Today, CUPRAP has nearly 350 members from 100 institutions.
