Citizenship, President's Day and Other Related Stuff

Citizenship, civic duty, and presidency...One thought lead to another, and they all lead to the library.

Seeing the title of Ann Martin's recent blog post (), I couldn't help but click to read more, and that post got me thinking. One thought led to another and a glance at the calendar told me that the timing couldn't be better—this is an ideal topic for President's Day.

First, though, a little clarity is in order because the terms "citizenship" and "civic duty" intertwine in my mind, but neither is well defined.

Fortunately, the library came to my rescue!

The PA Library Association has just gone live with PA Forward, an initiative to fuel five types of knowledge essential to success, including civic and social literacy. On that site, not only did I get a better grasp of the terms, I also learned that readers are more than twice as likely as non-readers to volunteer or do charity work!

If you are looking to do your civic duty and help to better the community with your volunteer efforts, your library (the Frank Sarris Public Library, that is) can help.

A search of the catalog gives results that include "Community Projects and Empowered Girls: a Girl's Guide to Positive Activism," volunteering, and Philanthropy—and it's possible to find stories about volunteerism from the "everyday" to the extraordinary.

Speaking of extraordinary people, it's President's Day!

In case you didn't already know, the library offers age-appropriate biographies about those fine individuals and it also has several copies of the children's favorite (and Caldecott Medal book) "So You Want to Be President" by Judith St. George.

Whether you enjoy reading about these "good citizens" or you're looking to learn how you can help your community, the library is the place to be!
