Last night the Boys Lacrosse team came from behind at Merrick Athletic Field, the home of Seton LaSalle High School, and eked out a 10-9 victory over the Rebels in a Division 2 game.
Trailing 9-8 with 32 seconds remaining in the final period, Connor Niemeyer was the recipient of a fortuitous, high-bouncing, “hail Mary” clearing pass from Canon-Mac’s defensive zone, finding himself all alone against the Rebels goalie, netting the tying goal.

As onlookers prepared for what seemed to be an inevitable overtime period, senior Matt Maletta won the ensuing faceoff and freshman Ben Ward scored with only 10 seconds remaining in regulation time to propel the Big Macs to a hard-fought victory.
Ward’s goal was his third goal of the game and Maletta’s winning faceoff was one of 15 face-offs he won in the contest. In addition to his face-off prowess, Maletta contributed four goals and an assist to help raise Canon-McMillan’s overall record to 5-1 and 1-1 in Division 2 play.
