Canon-McMillan School Directors Vote Down Contract
One director said the motion could have saved the district thousands of dollars.

Canon-McMillan school directors on Monday voted to go against the recommendation of Athletic Director Guy Montecalvo when they rejected a proposed contract for sports medicine services for student athletes.
The proposed contract was with West Penn Allegheny Health System and would have run from July 1 until June 30, 2016.
According to Director Joseph Zupancic, the proposal came after the board directed Montecalvo to examine cost-saving measures within the athletic department. After six weeks, Montecalvo proposed this contract, which he said could have potentially saved Canon-McMillan thousands of dollars.

“Six weeks ago we asked Mr. Montecalvo to go and rework the agreement for training services to be provided to the district. He has done so and given us his recommendation that brings a significant savings to the district," Zupancic said. "If we vote against this tonight, we are voting against the recommendation of our athletic director.
Despite Zupancic's efforts, the board still voted 5-3 against the contract. Voting against it were directors Eric Kline, Paul Scarmazzi, Manuel Pihakis, Darla Bowman-Monaco and Zeffie Carroll.

According to Zupancic, the decision to vote against the motion stems from personal issues some board members have with one doctor involved in the proposed group.
