Canonsburg Council Reports Downtown Cleanup a Success
Economic development on the rise with Washington Hospital moving into former All Pro Auto Mall location.
At the Council meeting on Monday night, borough Manager Terry Hazlett reported that the municipality has put in extra effort in the last few weeks to clean up the downtown area, including street cleaning, brush trimming, planting flowers and replacing the glass from bus stop on Adams Avenue.
The Jefferson Avenue lights will be replaced within the next few weeks as well.
“Downtown looks pretty nice and we hope to keep it that way all summer,” Hazlett said.

In economic development, Hazlett confirmed that Washington Hospital will be taking over the former All Pro Auto Mall location. Permits are in process and specific details on how the property will be used are not known at this time.
Two new stores also opened in Canonsburg in the last few weeks—the and a skateboard store.

Hazlett also reported that municipal building renovations are close to moving into the work phase. The floors will be finalized at a meeting on Wednesday.
The code enforcement department has been continuing its campaign to enforce violations with a focus on illegal vehicles. Officials have issued nearly 50 citations in April for unregistered vehicles. There were only 84 total for all of 2011.
Borough Engineer Harvey Treschow reported that six contractors completed bids on the 2012 paving project, which includes Woodland Road, Alpine Drive and Crosby Drive. He opened the sealed bids at the meeting and prices ranged from $65,000 to nearly $95,000. Council will make a recommendation and vote at the next meeting.
Councilwoman Fran Coleman reported that the Parks and Recreation Committee will be renovating the women’s dressing room at the pool with new carpet, painting, and mats. The committee is also looking to add an air conditioner and renovate the concession stand. They are also in the process of addressing the noise associated with the skateboard park.
The April fire department report was also read at the meeting and stated that there were a total of 14 calls in April with a total damage of $3500.
The Uniform Construction Code Appeals Board has open positions. Anyone interested should contact a council member.
The next meeting is a voting meeting and will be on Monday, May 14, at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers.
