Canonsburg: No Tax Increase Expected

Councilman Rich Russo said the borough's first budget meeting Tuesday ended with a preliminary spending plan that included no tax increase.

Canonsburg Council met for its first budget meeting Tuesday, one finance Chair Rich Russo said ended with a tentative balanced budget.

Council is working to finalize details of a $4.2 million spending plan for 2012, which is not expected to include a tax increase.

Russo said an approximate $43,000 shortfall would be plugged with money from 2010's fund balance.

One mill generates about $46,000 in Canonsburg.

Russo said council is considering funding three major projects for 2012, which include renovation of the borough building, upgrades to two streets and the repair of a flashing cross walk sign at the borough's senior center.

How the renovations to the borough building will be paid for is still being mulled, he said—confirming that renovations to the police department and upgrades to the restrooms were priorities.

None of the restrooms in the borough building currently meet the requirements of the American's With Disabilities Act, officials have said.

And Russo said that while the borough receives money through the state Community Development Block Grant program to repair income-qualified streets,council has decided to also renovate three others with money from its capital fund.

He said about $91,000 has been earmarked for those repairs on Woodland, Alpine and Crosby.

Budget talks will continue, with the next meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 1, Russo said.

The meeting will be held in council chambers in the and is open to the public.
