Canonsburg Police: Man Hospitalized After Shooting Himself in the Foot

An Allegheny General Hospital spokeswoman said Monday afternoon the man was in fair condition.

A Canonsburg man was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital after borough police said he accidentally shot himself in the foot on Sunday.

Police said Richard Nemeth, 55, of 207 Munnell St., was initially taken to Canonsburg Hospital’s emergency room after he told police he heard someone ā€œjigglingā€ his front door.

Nemeth told police he retrieved his Smith & Wesson revolver, but tripped on the way to the front door, accidentally discharging the firearm and causing extensive damageā€ to his right foot.

A witness said he observed a person dressed in black flee from the area of Nemeth’s home. Officers said there were no signs of forced entry.

Canonsburg police said Nemeth was later transported to Allegheny General Hospital for further treatment, where a spokeswoman on Monday afternoon said he was in fair condition.
