Cecil Man Sentenced for Embezzling $913K

Attorney said John J. Tain was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison.

A Cecil Township man was sentenced in federal court this week to 33 months in prison for embezzling more than $900,000 from his former employer.

U.S. District Judge Maurice B. Cohill sentenced John J. Tain, 40, of 1172 Valleyview Drive, on a mail fraud conviction after the man used ā€œlarge sumsā€ of company money for mortgages, credit card bills and gambling.

According to a release from U.S. Attorney David J. Hickton Tuesday, Tain was employed as the controller for UBICS Inc., and international, internet technology company from January 2005 through March 2010.

During that time, Hickton said Tain caused unauthorized wire transfers and checks from the company’s bank account to make personal payments and transactions.

ā€œBecause Twain was the controller and a trusted employee, he was able to hide these transactions from management even though they totaled $913,230.15 and spanned more than four years,ā€ Hickton said in the release. ā€œIt was clear from the evidence collected during the investigation that Tain expended large sums of money on gambling.ā€
