Election Guide: Canonsburg Council

Here's what you need to know if you're voting in Canonsburg next week.

Although a former councilman’s name will appear on the ballot for the First Ward in , it is unclear if he will assume the position if elected—technically.

Borough Manager Terry Hazlett said that on council in September, it happened too late for his name to be removed from the ballot.

And council, Hazlett said, never received a written resignation—which means it will not make a move to fill the seat before Election Day.

“A.J. did not resign officially so the advice of the solicitor was that we should wait until after the election,” he said.

If Williams attains the votes to win and chooses not to fill the post, Hazlett said council will appoint someone to the seat. Fellow councilmen from the First Ward, he said, will make the recommendation.

Williams ran unopposed.

Reached Tuesday, Williams said he decided not to submit an official letter to ensure that council didn't appoint someone to fill the seat. Instead, he wanted to see how the election turned out.

"That way, if someone mounted a good write-in campaign, they would be able to fill the seat," Williams said.

He also confirmed that if elected, he will not accept the position.

"I will decline it," Williams said.

There are two, four-year seats open in the second ward—and newcomer Joseph McGarry and incumbent Fran Coleman secured the Democratic nominations are those on the Democratic side of the ballot.

There are no Republican challengers.
