Emergency-Vehicles Initiative Clears Senate Committee

"This is a common sense idea that will get people on the scene more quickly," state Sen. Tim Solobay said. "The faster the response, the better the outcome."

A bill defining emergency vehicles for first responders cleared the Senate Appropriations Committee today with an amendment by that will help county hazmat directors respond more quickly to emergencies.

“This is a common sense idea that will get people on the scene more quickly,” Solobay said. “The faster the response, the better the outcome.”

Solobay’s amendment, identical to his stand-alone Senate Bill 1010, allows the personal vehicles of county hazmat directors to be considered emergency vehicles when they are responding to emergencies.

“Essentially, these people are never off duty,” Solobay said. “This change will make sure they don’t have to drive somewhere to switch vehicles before responding.”

The components of Senate Bill 1010 were amended into Senate Bill 1067, another bill dealing with emergency vehicles, during a meeting of the Appropriations Committee today.

With the amendment SB1067 passed the committee unanimously and heads to the full Senate for a vote.
