Here are some tips to keep your family safe this winter.

The holidays and winter can be a wonderful time of the year, but only if you're safe.

Here are some tips from both the NFPA and NFSA:
- Make sure trees are at least three feet from any heat source—fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents and lights.
- Place a tree somewhere that it's not blocking an exit.
- Water the tree daily. For the recipe to a tea concoction that helps extend the life of a tree, click here.
- Replace strings of lights with worn or broken cords/bulbs. Don't use lit candles to decorate a tree.
- Turn off the Christmas tree before leaving the house or going to bed.
- Limit your use of space heaters and never leave them unattended.
- Check your smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly and have full battery power.
- Have an escape plan and keep emergency numbers handy.
