Lady Big Macs Win AAAA WPIAL Championship Game

Canon-McMillan girls softball took the lead over Hempfield in the fourth inning scoring 4 runs which held up to win the title.

Coach Michelle Moeller's Lady Big Macs were all smiles after winning their first WPIAL softball title in school history, beating the Hempfield Lady Spartans 4-1 at California University of Pennsylvania's Lilley Field on Thursday night.

"I told them to enjoy the day, have fun and don't be nervous," Moeller said in a post-game interview on WJPA-AM.

The championship game was a pitcher's duel as both pitchers held their opponent scoreless through the first 3 1/2 innings.

The 4th inning provided all the offense the team needed to be victorious. Two singles and two fielder's choice groundouts gave the Big Macs a 1-0 lead with two outs, and set the stage for sophomore Olivia LoRusso.

She drilled a back-breaking 3-run homerun to increase the lead to 4-0.

C-M Junior Alayna Astudo completed a great pitching effort by allowing only one Hempfield run in the 7th inning after a lead-off double and two fielder's choice ground outs.

Tara Schram capped off a stellar defensive effort by the Lady Big Macs, sliding to catch a fly ball in left field for the final out of the game.

Moeller will lead Canon-McMillan in its first appearance at the PIAA playoffs on Monday.

"We plan to take the same approach to the states," Moeller told WJPA.  "We're gonna have some fun."
