Man Charged With Unlawful Contact With a Minor

Lawrence W. McElroy was arraigned by District Judge David Mark and remanded to Washington County Jail on $250,000 bond.

The state Attorney General's child predator unit on Tuesday charged a Cooperstown, Pa. man with unlawful contact with a minor and other charges.

Court records show that Lawrence W. McElroy was arraigned before District Judge David Mark on charges he made unlawful contact with minors ("obscene and other sexual materials") and criminal use of a communications facility.

The Observer-Reporter in Washington reported that McElroy, a retired state trooper, was arrested in Canonsburg after reportedly making arrangements to meet a girl there that he believed to be 13.

The paper reported that McElroy had been contacting the girl—who was reallyĀ  a special agent with the attorney general's office—on the Internet since early April, and told her he wanted to have sex with her.

Court dockets show that Mark set McElroy's bail at $250,000, and that he was remanded to the Washington County Jail.

His preliminary hearing has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. May 3.
