Mayor: Canon-McMillan Parents Have No Need to Fear

A letter went out to Canon-McMillan parents about a man approaching two First Street Elementary School students on Vine Street—but Mayor David H. Rhome said there was "no criminal intent."

Mayor David H. Rhome said for parents at Canon-McMillan not to fear: After investigating two children being approached on Vine Street Monday, it was determined there was “no criminal intent.”

The Canon-McMillan School District had asked parents in a letter to be extra careful in the wake of the incident, that happened on Monday.

, sent home to parents Tuesday, the district indicated that an older man driving a green truck approached two First Street Elementary School students.

He reportedly asked the children for assistance with something inside his vehicle.

But Rhome said that after the alert went out, a 90-year-old man approached police and said that he believed that he was the individual being described.

Rhome said that the man was questioned, and told police he was looking for material to scrap.

The mayor reiterated that "there is no reason to be alarmed."
