News of Note: Canon-McMillan School Board

If you missed Monday's voting meeting, here's what happened.

met Monday for their regular monthly voting meeting. The following actions were taken:

  • The board unanimously approved various personnel changes, including the removal of a para-educator.
  • The board approved a contract with Van Dyk for copier services. The terms of the contract were not immediately available Monday night.
  • Directors unanimously approved a contract with GG&C Bus Company for student transportation services to the Western PA School for the Blind at a rate of $215 a day. It also approved a contract with the company for student transportation to the DePaul School for Hearing & Speech at a rate of $154 a day).
  • The board also amended the 2011-12 school calendar to remove Feb. 8, 2012 as a scheduled snow make-up day.
  • Directors also unanimously accepted the financial audit report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2011 as presented by Cypher & Cypher on Nov. 7.
  • The board voted to dispose of an old wrestling mat. It will be sold to the Resilite Co for $2,000. Substitute Superintendent Michael Daniels said the money would go toward the purchase of a new, lighter wrestling mat for the district.
  • Directors also approved a field trip for the wrestling team to travel to the Greenville Duals on Dec. 9-10 in Greenville, Pa. It also approved a trip to the Hoover High School Holiday Tournament on Dec 16-17 in North Canton, Ohio. A trip to the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. on Jan. 12 through Jan. 14 was also approved. Daniels said all costs associated with travel, meals and lodging would be paid for by the boost club.
  • The board also granted permission for the high school foreign language department to explore plans for trips to France, Spain and Italy in the spring of 2013. The trips will be taken over spring break.
  • The board approved Rob Maceiko for delinquent earned income/net profits tax collections for Canonsburg effective Jan. 1 through June 30, 2012.
  • The board recognized outgoing President Debbie Link for her 12 years of service as a school director. Outgoing Director Laura Grossman was recognized for her more than five years or service and outgoing Director Robert Malwitz was recognized for four years of service on the school board.
  • Directors also recognized Chelsea Geist, an environmental and zoology science teacher who spearheaded the creation of the Geist Trail located behind the high school. Daniels said it was “the newest addition to the district’s environmental movement” and was made possible thought a mini-grant through the district. The official ribbon-cutting was held on Nov. 1. The trail will be ready for use in the spring.
