News You Can Use: Five Things You Need to Know From CM's Last Board Meeting

Directors set the 2012-13 school calendar and recognized two high school students, among other business.

1. Resident Jim Smith on Monday thanked administrators at for their help, and said a committee tasked with spearheading fundraising efforts for renovations at Big Mac stadium was seeking nonprofit status.

Smith said that way, the group will be able to begin soliciting funds for the project.

"Our goal is to collect $1.5 million toward renovations of stadium for our student athletes," he said, adding that the name of the organization will be the Canon-McMillan Foundation.

He again thanked the board an administrators for their support.

"I appreciate that you guys undertstand that athletics are an extension of the education process," Smith told those in attendance.

2. The board accepted the retirements of nine district teachers. For information on who retired, .

3. The board recognized seniors Tyler Engel and Stephen Strosko, who recieved the Boys Scouts of America's highest rank of Eagle Scout.

4. The board approved the 2012-13 school calendar with a start date of Aug. 27 and an ending date of June 6, 2013 for students.

5. The board approved an agreement between Washington & Jefferson College and the district regarding the Benedum Master Teacher Grant Exchange. Under the agreement, a district teacher will be on staff at W&J for an academic year—with the cost of that teacher's substitute being paid for through the grant.
