No Tax Increase or Sewer Rate Increase for Canonsburg Next Year

The 2012 borough and sewage authority budgets were approved by borough council.

At Monday’s borough council meeting, Canonsburg's $4.2 million spending plan for 2012 was approved by a vote of 6 to 1. It included no tax increase.

Patricia Romano cast the sole dissenting vote.

The balanced budget has a general purpose of 30 mills, a special road fund of 2 mills, a debt service of 2.33 mills, and a special road fund of 3 mills for a total of 37.33 mills.

Public comments prompted a discussion of the adjusted parking fines, which will be doubled from $5 to $10 beginning next year.

Although the parking fine motion passed with a six-to-one vote and the additional revenue from increased fines was included in the balanced budget that also passed, the issue could be opened again in January if desired.

With the Dec. 12 meeting as the last one of this year, council also voted to pass the 2012 Canonsburg-Houston Joint Sewer Budget with a unanimous vote.

The total budget is $3.3 million. The budget will not include a sewage rate increase in 2012 for residents in the boroughs of Canonsburg or Houston.
