Reminder: Scholarship Candidates For State Military College Sought

Completed applications must be mailed to Neuman's constituent service office by Feb. 15. Selections will be made by mid-March.

Editor's Note: We got a call from state Rep. Brandon Neuman's office the other day reminding us that the deadline for this is coming up—so we are re-running this story, from Oct. 28.

is seeking qualified high school students from the 48th Legislative District—which includes Canonsburg and North Strabane— to participate in the Valley Forge Military College’s Legislative Appointment Initiative.

The student is selected by a three-person committee appointed by Neuman, D-North Strabane. They are guaranteed acceptance to Valley Forge Military College and will receive a minimum $12,000 annual scholarship to attend the college.

Scholarships are funded by Valley Forge Military College without the use of state dollars.

"The Valley Forge Military College is a proud and honorable tradition in our Commonwealth and it has an esteemed reputation throughout the country," Neuman said. "The college has trained many fine young men and women to lead honorable careers in the military and I am privileged to help a deserving student in Washington County fulfill his or her goal of attending this prestigious institution."

A student seeking the legislative appointment for the 2012-13 academic year must have a minimum SAT score of 1,000 and an overall high school grade point average of 2.5 on a four-point scale.

Candidates should also be involved in sports or other extracurricular activities, show leadership potential and demonstrate a commitment to the community.

Appointees will also be nominated for the ROTC Early Commissioning Program.

Founded in 1928, Valley Forge is a coeducational two-year transfer college located in Wayne, about 15 miles west of Philadelphia. It is one of only five early commissioning military programs in the entire United States.
