Roundup: Borough Working with Sarris on Re-Opening Efforts

Renovation of the borough building was also discussed this week.

At the Borough Council monthly agenda meeting Monday night, council president John Bevec praised the Canonsburg fire and police departments for their hard work in

“Perhaps even scarier than the thought of losing one of our anchor businesses in Canonsburg is the thought of covered in chocolate,” joked Bevec.

Bevec also announced that council and the borough will be working closely with to ensure the company is able to make progress quickly in the rebuilding process. Manager Nadeen Steffy has offered to help locate retail space for Sarris, if so desired.

Council also expressed concerns over an agreement with the state Department of Transportation to maintain the sidewalk on the state Route 980 bridge. After agreeing more clarification was needed on the extent of the borough’s responsibility and liability, the item was taken off the agenda for a vote next week.

Items council is expected to vote on are a contract with Hayes Design for renovations to be completed at the borough building. Also, council will vote on a $510,000 loan to complete the renovations.

Borough Manager Terry Hazlett also informed the council that he was contacted regarding a monthly spay-and-neuter program for the Canonsburg area. The cost would be $35 per cat. The borough would need to provide a space to house the animals for a couple of hours after the procedure to make the program possible.

Hazlett was asked to look into what type of liability issues this might present for the borough before a decision can be made.

Canonsburg Council will hold its voting meeting Monday in the borough building.
