Roundup: Canon-McMillan School Board
Board increases lunch prices and passes resolution opposing proposed voucher program.

The Canon-McMillan School Board held its regular monthly meeting Monday night.
The board approved a resolution opposing the Pennsylvania Senate Bill 1. This bill would allow low-income students in poor-performing school districts to attend the school of their choice. The bill is often referred to as the school voucher program.
In addition, the board voted to extend its contract with Nutrition Inc. to provide food service for the 2011-2012 school year. The contract includes a rate increase of $.05 for breakfast and $.25 for lunch. It also includes a $10,000 profit guarantee for the company. Administrators last week said the increase brings Canon McMillan's prices in line with those in surrounding districts.

Students, parents and staff will say goodbye to a familiar face at Wylandville Elementary. The board accepted the resignation of secretary Suzanne Kline. Kline is retiring June 20 after working for Canon-McMillan for 26 years.
Another longtime employee, Sherry Frey, custodian at Canonsburg Middle School, is retiring after 39 years in the district.

The board also took an opportunity to recognize several students for outstanding achievements. Among those recognized were the first graders in Ashley Knizner’s class at Cecil Elementary, who collected gently used stuffed animals and books and bundled them for needy children in the area as a part of the second-annual Snuggle Up and Read drive.
Three other individual students were recognized for outstanding performances in various competitions.
