Roundup: Canon-McMillan School District News

Here are five things you might have missed from Monday's school board meeting.

School Board held its regular meeting Monday. Directors took action on the following:

1. The board approved contracts with:

  • Allied Waste for the 2011-2012 school year.
  • Orkin for three years beginning July 1, 2011.
  • Sunshine Kids, Inc for transportation.

2. School Director Joseph Zupancic and Manuel Pihakis were selected as the voting delegates to represent the district at the Pennsylvania School Boards Association’s Legislative Policy Council at this year’s meeting. It will be held Oct. 20 during the School Leadership Conference in Hershey.

3.The board unanimously voted to reject the request made by Horizon Properties Group for a LERTA designation for the Cambria Suites on Racetrack Road.

LERTA is the Local Economic Revitalization Tax Assistance Act. LERTA allows local taxing authorities to exempt improvements to a business property if such property is located in a deteriorating area as determined by a governing body.

4. The board voted to approve of the disposal of two busses through the 422 Auction.

5. The board recognized the following:

  • Alexa Nyiri of Canonsburg Middle School won first place in the Peace Art Contest sponsored by Rotary District 7330 of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
  • The 2011 Educational Leadership Collaboration Award was given to for its work with Junior Achievement and the school-university partnership with Washington & Jefferson College.
