Student Mars Projects Out of This World

Students from North Strabane Intermediate School presented their take on what a colony on Mars in 2030 would look like.

A roomful of parents turned out to the meeting Monday to see presentations from students in fifth- and sixth-grade North Strabane Intermediate School classes.

Students from Charles Tatum’s gifted class presented a project-based learning experience called The Mars Project.

The project tasked students with creating a colony on Mars in the year 2030—and also deal with everything from transportation to and from Earth, as well as gravity and other issues related to an experience on the Red Planet.

The project was a mix of math, science and English, with students sharing Power Point presentations, commercials and associated blogs with school directors.

The students received heavy applause for their work, which included models of their actual Mars projects.

“Very impressive,” board President Darla Bowman-Monaco said.

Tatum agreed as the students filed out of the meeting room.

“Way to go guys!” he told them.
