UPDATE: Standoff Over; Suspect in Custody

Canon-McMillan sent an alert out to parents advising some routes may be delayed in wake of incident.

Canonsburg officials confirmed just after 3 p.m. that a police standoff on First Avenue is over and that the man who had holed himself up in the home since 11 a.m. was taken into custody.

Canonsburg Mayor David H. Rhome said earlier Wednesday afternoon that police and members of Washington Regional SWAT were at the scene, and that a woman who lives in the house safely escaped.

He said that her son, who has not been identified, had remained inside with unknown weapons. No one else was reportedly inside the home, he said.

Rhome said details were still emerging, and police and fire officials blocked off portions of First Street and also Hooks Lane, near where the standoff took place.

Canonsburg police and other agencies were alerted to the standoff after a 911 call was made around 11 a.m., police officials said.

The Canon-McMillan School District alerted parents to possible bus delays in the wake of the police standoff.

"Due to a road closure on Route 980 between Columbia Drive and Valley Road, some bus routes may be delayed," the automated message warned parents around 3 p.m. Wednesday.
