Chestnut Hill On Ice To Feature Ice Carving, Axe Throwing, More

Chestnut Hill on Ice is set for Friday and Saturday, complete with ice sculptures, an ice bar, bonfires, live music, chili, and much more.

CHESTNUT HILL, PHILADELPHIA — This weekend, Chestnut Hill is getting icy, and we're not talking about the winter weather on its way to the region.

This Friday and Sunday marks Chestnut Hill on Ice.

Events will take place along Germantown Avenue between Rex and Willow Grove avenues on Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday from noon to 6 p.m.

The free weekend-long festival will feature ice-themed attractions, including a pop-up iceless ice skating rink, an ice bar, and live ice carvings along Germantown Avenue.

Pay-as-you-go activities for all ages will be littered throughout the neighborhood.

Chestnut Hill on Ice features dozens of ice carvings along Germantown Avenue, live demonstrations, and work from world-renowned ice sculptor Peter Slavin and his team from Ice Sculpture Philly, with additional cold-weather activities.

There will be plenty of restaurant and retail specials for those looking for cozy comforts, including chili, hot drinks, and adult beverages.

There will also be live music and other pop-up activities.

2022 Chestnut Hill on Ice activities include:

  • Ice Sculptures & Live Ice Carving Demonstrations: Masterfully crafted ice sculptures will be displayed along Germantown Avenue on Friday and Saturday. Live ice carving shows by Peter Slavin and his team will occur at Laurel Hill Gardens, 8125 Germantown Ave., on Friday from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Ice Sculpture Philly is the world’s first performance ice sculpting company, combining action, adventure, humor, drama, and audience participation to create an unforgettable experience.
  • Iceless Ice Skating Rink: Visitors of all ages will enjoy gliding across an iceless rink, socially distanced from other skaters, in this all-weather activity. Skates in varying sizes and walkers for non-skaters will be available on site. Admission is $15 per person, and it is recommended to purchase them in advance. The rink will be located at 150 East Evergreen Ave. and will be open Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Get tickets here.
  • Ice Bonfire: Stay warm and cozy as Chestnut Hill on Ice concludes with an impressive eight-foot bonfire encased in a pillar of ice on Saturday at 5:30 p.m., at 150 East Evergreen Ave.
  • Ice Bar at Market at the Fareway: Chestnut Hill Brewing Company will host an outdoor ice bar carved entirely out of ice blocks in its outdoor beer garden located at 8221 Germantown Ave., created exclusively for Chestnut Hill on Ice. Enjoy ice-cold locally-brewed beers, wines, and hot drinks at their outdoor ice bar.
  • Axe Throwing: On Friday and Saturday, bring out your inner lumberjack with a fun game of axe throwing located at Laurel Hill Gardens, 8125 Germantown Ave. Each game provides 10 axe throws at the bullseye and includes training/instruction by expert staff for first-timers. Side-by-side throwing lanes make it easy for friends and family to compete next to each other. Participants must be 14 years or older. Tickets are available for $15 by pre-sale and will be available on-site on a first-come, first-served basis. Get tickets here.
  • Warming Stations: Stations with fire pits will be located along Germantown Avenue, offering attendees the chance to warm up while enjoying warm adult- and children-friendly beverages and snacks.
  • Stateside Vodka will offer bottle sales at their mobile bar at Laurel Hill Gardens, 8125 Germantown Ave. on Friday and Saturday.
  • Chili Specials: Offered at various local restaurants.
    • Iron Hill Brewery: Beef and chorizo chili- an international twist on the classic American chili with plump tomatoes, aromatic spices and savory chorizo sausage simmered together to create that perfect comfort food to warm you up during those cold winter days. Served with shredded cheese, sour cream and tortilla strips.
    • Chestnut Hill Brewing Company: Vegan Chili with poblano peppers+yellow onion+garlic+roasted tomatoes+pinto beans+black beans+vegan sour crema+ Frito chips+ chopped cilantro
    • McNally’s Tavern: Turkey Chili
    • Tavern on the Hill: Homemade savory chili with beef, peppers and spices, served with all the fixings, Cilantro, shredded cheddar cheese, wedge of lime and homemade tortilla chips. $12 a bowl

  • Live Music: On Saturday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., enjoy acoustic covers by singer Dan Stepanukha as he performs live at Chestnut Hill Brewing Company, 8231 Germantown Ave. Sit outside, enjoy some tunes, and relax with an extensive list of beers and boozy cocktails that can be enjoyed in an ice mug. Also new for the season, a new winter-themed cocktail— a Salted Caramel Vodka Hot Chocolate.
  • Meet the Snow Queens: On Saturday from noon to 2 p.m., catch a glimpse of Snow Queen and her friend Ice Princess as they greet and take pictures with visitors at 150 East Evergreen Ave. Masks must be worn to interact with Snow Queen and Ice Princess.
  • Bredenbecks Bakery Pop-up Stands: at 8617 Germantown Ave., enjoy gourmet hot chocolate, cookies, cupcakes, and hot chocolate bombs! Bredenbecks gourmet hot chocolate will also be available at Laurel Hill Gardens, 8125 Germantown Ave.
  • Winter Warehouse Sale: Friday, noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Women’s Apparel Sale from six stores at 8532 Germantown Ave. Happy Hour is Friday 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with white wine and Prosecco!
  • Beyond the Tutors: Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Come meet our newest members, Dr. Kim Cipolla and Dr. LeighAnn McCormack from Beyond the Tutors at their booth located at the Blue Lot 150 E. Evergreen Ave. where the Ice Skating Rink is. Learn about their services while your child/children spend some time in the "Kid-Zone." There will be games/prizes and crafts for the kids to enjoy. "Warm Up with a Good Book." Beyond the Tutors will be collecting children’s books that will be donated to local schools and community centers to help put books in children’s hands this winter.
