Counterfeit Money Dispute Leads To Armed Robbery In Mt Airy: Cops

Three men tried to use counterfeit money at a Sharpnack Street store then pulled guns on an employee and stole his gun, police said.

MT. AIRY, PHILADELPHIA — Two men are sought after allegedly trying to use counterfeit money then robbing a Mt. Airy-area store at gunpoint in late March, Philadelphia Police said.

The robbery occurred at 5:29 p.m. Friday, March 22 at the RD Grocery Store located at 152 East Sharpnack Street.

According to police, three men came into the store and got into an argument with employees over counterfeit money.

Two of the three men pulled out handguns and pointed them at the employee, who was also armed, police said.

One suspect took the employee's handgun while another tried to open the cash register, but was unsuccessful, according to police.

All three suspects then fled the store in an unknown direction and manner.

The employee's gun was taken but police recovered it a short time later in a vehicle that was involved in a crash, police said.

No shots were fired nor were any injuries reported in the incident, police said.

All three suspects are described as black men.

One, who police said was in his late 30s, had a thin build, medium complexion, and a beard He was wearing tan pants, and a tan shirt.

Another was described as in his mid to late 30s with a medium complexion. He was wearing a black baseball cap with a "Legend" logo, a dark shirt, and dark pants.

The third suspect was said to have a stock build, a bald head, and a dark complexion. He was wearing prescription glasses, a dark sweatshirt, and dark pants.

Police said all three are considered armed and dangerous.
