Monday, January 23: Brothers, Sing On! The Roxborough Male Chorus Hosts a "Meet, Greet, & Sing!" for Men Who Sing.

All men who like to sing are invited to attend! Enjoy the camaraderie; share in the music; consider becoming part of this music tradition!

The Roxborough Male Chorus is hosting a musical “Meet, Greet, & Sing” on Monday evening, January 23rd at 7:30 pm and all men who like to sing are invited to attend.

The chorus, singing in four-part-harmony and currently producing two concerts a year during the spring and winter seasons, has provided music to the Roxborough community since 1923. Its first director, William C. Ames, and its first accompanist, William E. Tippet, created the singing group for men, who loved music and resided in and around the neighborhood.

Mount Airy resident Alan Ankeny, President of the Roxborough Male Chorus, has been a part of the chorus since 2005.

“We don’t have any record of how the chorus was started or why it was only male voices,” Ankeny said. “I suspect that it may have simply been a result of men who had sung in male glee clubs in high school or college, wanting to continue to enjoy music and the camaraderie of singing together.”

While the ability to read music is helpful, it is not a requirement to sing in the chorus. Conductor Kevin Chun will be glad to teach everyone how to sing in a chorus with piano accompaniment by Lois F. Terry.

Members share their musical talents and versatility singing a variety of Broadway show tunes, popular songs, standards, doo wop, classical pieces, gospel, sacred and patriotic tunes, and members’ personal favorites. The “Meet, Greet, & Sing” will be an opportunity for men to sing songs of varied genres, to chat with its members, and to determine if this activity can become part of their regular weekly activities.

The musical “Meet, Greet, & Sing” as well as the chorus’ first rehearsal will be Monday, January 23rd at 7:30 pm at Leverington Presbyterian Church, 6301 Ridge Avenue at Hermitage Street, Philadelphia, PA 19128. There is free parking in the church parking lot and on the street.

Enjoy the camaraderie and share in the music! Consider becoming part of this Roxborough musical tradition.
