Where Diversity Thrives, So Should Outreach: April 10 Workshop for Nonprofits Focuses on Attracting Diverse Board Members and Donors

Philadelphia, PA…As cultural diversity in the Philadelphia Region continues to flourish, non-profit organizations must ensure that both the faces of their boards and their donors reflect this diversity.

To support them in this effort, the Association of Fundraising Professionals - Greater Philadelphia Chapter will hold a  workshop titled “The Business of Nonprofits: How to Create an Engaged Board and Attract Diverse Donors,”   on April 10, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The program will be held at the Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine St., Philadelphia).

The Pew Charitable Trust recently published a report that showed nearly all of Philadelphia’s recent population growth has come from communities of color.  The seminar will focus on strategies for attracting board members and donors from these growing communities of diverse cultures.

In order to embrace these new donor groups the nonprofits of Philadelphia will need to better understand their attitudes about philanthropy and funding priorities as well as how to engage prospective donors.

That’s why the AFP-GPC has asked Patricia A. Coulter, President of the Urban League of Philadelphia, to give the keynote address.

Coulter has spent her entire career working with and engaging minority talent in the city.  Besides her more than a decade’s work with the Urban League, Coulter has also provided strategic development and diversity consulting services to Fortune 100 companies as well as held leadership positions in management, business development, executive coaching, and college administration.

The Philadelphia Business Journal recognized Coulter has one of its “Women of Distinction,” and Dollars and Sense Magazine named her one of America’s Top 100 Black Business and Professional Women.

Coulter will be joined at the  workshop by an array of philanthropists and development professionals for an interactive panel discussion where experts will share they knowledge and experience on fundraising from emerging diverse donor groups.  Panelists include:

·         Neville Vakharia, Executive Committee member of the Asian Mosaic Fund Giving Circle

·         Kozue Tsunoda, Associate Director of Leadership giving at Swarthmore College

·         Susan Daily, Director of Development for the Association of Puertorriquenos en Marche
